Into the Depths

641

Black scuba divers across the world are searching for buried shipwrecks from the transatlantic slave trade, when millions of enslaved Africans were trafficked to the Americas during the 15th to the 19th centuries. A new six-part podcast series, Into the Depths, follows National Geographic Explorer Tara Roberts as she sets off on the journey of a lifetime to meet the divers, marine archaeologists, descendants of those brought over on ships, and historians investigating the lost stories of the slave trade. She’s inspired to share their accounts both to expand the historical record and to honor the estimated 1.8 million unsung souls who perished during the Middle Passage. Along the way, Tara meets up with her family and friends, spiritual advisers, and even a poet to help tell those ancestral stories, and delves into her own rootsβ€”challenging her assumptions about home and belonging.

    8,760 stars!!!
National Geographic explorer Tara Roberts quit her job and upended her life to became a certified scuba diver so she could join forces with the Black divers of Diving With a Purpose (DWP) and make Into the Depths, a show that quite literally brings us to the depths of the ocean to document the wreckage of a few of the thousands of slave ships that wrecked in the Atlantic Ocean during the transatlantic slave trade. What did you do to make your podcast?

    Into the depths
I found the topic interesting but I couldn’t put up with the very fast speech. So that is the reason I didn’t continue with this topic. There is no place to enter my nickname

Uplifting podcast about our troubled history.
The older I get, the more reluctant I am to wade into tragic subjects. However, the mystique of diving for shipwrecks coupled with the empowerment of the divers as they give voices to the victims is fascinating and compelling. An excellent podcast with a diverse cast.

I absolutely loved this podcast. I learned so much about history, slave ships, diving and myself.

    Emotional, educational, interesting & inspirational!!
I absolutely loved this podcast! So much that I’ve shared it & recommended it to countless people since finishing it. I also watched Clotilda on Disney+ (National Geographic) and though it was an interesting short documentary, it could not hold a candle to the worthiness of THIS podcast and the stories without the stories that the author shares. A+++!!!

    Loved this!
Truly worth the listen- from the science, to the new perspective on the slave trade, to the empowerment of African Americans being the ones in the field to be making the archaeological discoveries, to the host’s own voice and story. I feel enriched by the experience.

    So interesting!
This is the first podcast review I have ever written (since starting to listen to them when Serial debuted). I loved learning about the history of the shipwreck, their journeys and the lives of the people on the ships. The details and the empathy the host and divers brought to the shipwrecks and people felt genuine and sincere. Concrete science with data in service of healing (as one of the interviewees said)! The personal journey of the host was also nice. I want to know more about her matriarchs too!

Love the stories, hate the sound effects!
I loved this podcast but the sound effects and music in the background take away from the podcast. I would’ve enjoyed it so much more without all the noise.

    Refreshing deep dive
What an exciting and enthralling podcast about a phenomenal community of divers. History, science, socio-political issues presenting in the form of diving adventures, that's easy to understand and listen to!

    Amazing and Liberating
This podcast is absolutely amazing. Discovering the sunken ships of the Middle Passage is about so much more than the ships, it is returning the lost souls who were stolen back to their homes, and uncovering for us our lost histories and heritages. Thank you for sharing this with us all, for me it was really liberating, I learned so much and feel called to learn more.

  • 1234water
    Disappointing/inaccurate but Tara was fantastic.
I found it disappointing and tough to get over the constant tribalism/identity by skin color for groups and even individuals and with it the false idea that slaves were captured (minority of) and not traded (Majority of) I also found it disappointing that some divers think they are getting closer to their lost family ancestors/members and are looking for there β€˜ancestral tribe β€˜ Do those involved not know how genetically diverse Africa is and was? Africa was/is home the most genetically diverse place on the planet. Also: Alex Haley β€˜roots’ is riddled with historical inaccuracies, I was thrown back that there are people in the 21 century that think the book/movie ROOTS is historically accurate. Tara is charming, warm, and intelligent. Like all stories of man’s inhumanity to man this story can be emotionally tough to dive into (pun intended) while simultaneously being important that we do dive into it.

    Moving and inspiring
So many of us with ancestors who arrived from European countries a century or two ago take it for granted that we can trace our ancestry through records kept through generations. Tara brings to me the very clear understanding of how it must feel to not have that knowledge and how it must feel to uncover even tenuous connections through the diving projects. It breaks my heart that African descendants have had so much trauma through the generations. Thank you for sharing these moving and inspiring stories. Tara is such a good storyteller as well!

    Love it and Need it
I rarely write reviews but this podcast is filling my heart with pride and sadness at the same time. Sadness because as an African-American male, I feel like a unwanted stranger in β€œmy land.” When the stores are being told, it’s like I’m with the divers on these expeditions. The slave trade is SO painful but this is something we (I) needed to hear. Thank you, thank you, thank you ❀️

    Speaks to my soul
This podcast has it all: ship wrecks, history, maritime archeology, story-telling and an identity journey that resonates deeply. I’m grateful to have found this podcast after discovering that my own African ancestry narrative had been hidden under layers of white narratives.
