Materialism: A Materials Science Podcast

98

In this podcast, Taylor and Andrew investigate the past, present, and future of materials science and engineering. Topic areas ranging from cutting edge materials technology, the history of different materials, the commercialization of new materials, and exciting advances in processing and characterization are all covered in detail. Our episodes include things like the unlikely discovery of superglue or teflon, the fascinating backstories about modern biomaterials like dialysis filters, and updates on new technologies including wearable electronics, next generation batteries, and nanomaterials. In short, we hope to help listeners understand the critical role that materials have played in society and even glimpse into what the future may hold for new materials.

    My new favorite podcast
This show provides a perfect medium for learning materials science. It provides a level of simplicity for both broad and specific ideas in a way that is understandable, but also covers a lot of branching topics that add so much to the overall subject of each episode. Your enthusiasm and storytelling make the subject fun, memorable, and easier to learn, and this podcast has been a massive resource for that.

    Very Cool!
I stumbled onto this looking for science info on resin use in municipal pipe respiration. Very cool topics! I’m an alumnus of Univ of Utah (Chemical Engineering), so that’s a fun connection. I spent time in theory and operation of nuclear power on navy submarine and got introduced to MSE learning about plant materials selection based on irradiation, hi pressure/temp, etc. I definitely will listen to this regularly!

    Fantastic Resource!
I am typically a Spotify listener, but this podcast is so wonderful that I came here to leave a review! I am both an MSEN student and campus tour guide. Whenever I run into incoming freshman engineering students or high school student who love the question “Why?”, this podcast is my first recommendation for learning about the field. It has been so helpful in learning even more about the field beyond lectures and has even helped me prepare more for my undergrad research. Thank you so much for this wonderful podcast!

The reason I am on podcast
Whether you're a seasoned materials scientist, a student, or simply someone with a passing interest in the field, the Materialism Podcast has something to offer. The hosts' enthusiasm is contagious, and their expert insights provide a unique perspective that few other podcasts can match.

Terrific. For scientists and non-scientists alike.
Materialism has an unmatched breadth of topics, combined with superb technical depth and intriguing examples of real-world applications and manufacturing processes. Also, the hosts are fun to listen to. Keep it up!

    Helpful
These guys are changing what it means to learn chemistry. I was a physics major studying physics and didn’t really care much for chemistry just math. After listening to the show and learning about what it means to develop materials and how they influence the world has change my views and now I’m essentially a material scientist at a tech company where we make PVD coatings. The materialism podcast is opening up the doors to the field and making it more valuable. Once they get better guests on that have truly made a huge difference in society like Elon musk or something this podcast can explode.

    Learning materials made easier
I’ve listened to 10+ episodes and have learned a lot about material science,,, this podcast is easy to digest and well produced,,, for engineers with little training in materials, like myself, I feel a lot more confident approaching the subject after listening to Taylor and Andrew

This prof thinks your podcasts are awesome!
I use many of the ideas and references for my intro to material science and engineering class. In future classes I may give extra credit for listening to these podcasts. Taylor, Andrew, and Jared rock. Keep up the good work and a donation is coming your way, as soon as I can figure how to send it. 🙂

Fills the void and does it well
As an aspiring MSE I was looking for a casual source of information to broaden my knowledge and exposure to the field. There was almost nothing out there! These guys have improved with each episode and the podcast covers everything I would have expected and more

    Fun and Informative
One of my favorite podcasts — the hosts go into enough technical detail to make it interesting, but presented in such a way as to be accessible to non-experts. I look forward to every new episode (both regular and micro!)

    Incredible
Huge huge fan of this podcast! I’ve listened to 35 episodes in the last week or so (yes I’m aware of how much time that is), and other than the pain of a swelling brain from so much information I have thoroughly enjoyed each episode. I am currently an undergrad in metallurgical engineering, and this podcast has really helped reinforce my desires and give direction in where to focus my studies by offering information from such diverse fields.

Great chemistry, history, and physics breakdown!
I study Materials Science and I love this podcast! It is accurate and easy to understand. They dont just have boring talk. They include history, fun facts, and knowledgable guests. If only 6 stars were an option.

Review from an undergraduate it Materials Science
Fantastic podcast. Although I’ve only listened to the first three and a select few of the later episodes, each have been jam-packed with the creative and important ideas at the core of materials science. We get a dive into both the traditional and unconventional, challenging and expanding on what we know about materials. Most of everything is presented concisely and is accessible to a more general audience - especially in the first episode on the history of steel. So often, the cutting-edge research in material science hides beyond the chasm of review papers and research articles unfamiliar to those new to the field. Personally, Materialism has done a fantastic job so far of bridging that gap, covering materials used in kitchen knives and skateboards to electronics and energy storage. So if you’re a student looking for a new perspective or you’re just curious about what makes up the world around you, you’re probably in the right place.

    Well spoken, well researched info
This podcast is chock full of great information in the material science community. While it’s a little too smort for the average Joe, it’s great for anyone working in science or engineering. The two hosts work very well together to present information without too much monologue. Would love for you guys to expand it by talking with companies who actually work in these industries.
