History in Technicolour

90

Wolf and David explore the history films we love or (or sometimes, films we’d loved just a little less but find interesting). Turns out we like different things…anyway, then we given them a score for two things – how good are they as a film, and how accurate are they with their history.

When you’ve listened, join us at the History of England Facebook Group – you can vote, and tell us what you think of the film, and you can even tell us (in no uncertain terms) what you think of our views (while writing to your MP in the strongest possible terms).

These guys are fun. Wish they would record more consistently.

    Love the pod!
What a joy to discover that David has a second podcast! The intergenerational exchange that he and Wolf share is delightful (I’m way closer to David’s era) and helps put the films into context. I’m not very knowledgeable about film but have enjoyed their take on the ones I know (Lion in Winter and the Pythons, especially) and discovered some new ones to try (Master and Commander, Belle, and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure). Even if I’m not likely to watch (the witch sounds way too scary for me!), the podcasts are well worth a listen for the history and the fun they share. Thank you, David and Wolf, and please keep up the good work.

    it's gotten bad
They hate some of my favorite movies. It's hard to get into it with so much negativity.

Title of movie you two forgot. I believe it was §Johnny Got His Gun.
Perhaps Dalton Trumbo wrote it. It was so horrendous that I had to stop reading the novel.

    Great podcast!
Super fun and informative! I really enjoy the variety of movies they pick and how well they summarize the history. 10/10 for entertainment plus 10/10 for historical accuracy!

    Interesting and hilarious
I love the banter between David and Wolf. They bring up interesting historical and cinematic points. I know that David has been through a lot recently and I wish David well and that he has a full recovery. Also....perhaps selfishly, I’d like to ask if there are any plans to record new episodes in the future? 🤞🤞🤞🤞

    My favorite and most valued
I am an avid podcast listener. Podcasts have improved the quality of my life and my favorite podcaster is David Crowther. I subscribe to over a dozen podcasts and the best two are History of England and History in Technicolor. I am looking forward to the return of History in Technicolor.

    Terrifically Fun Podcast!
David and Wolf (or Wolfy) have a delightful rapport with each other. They're smart, insightful, and hilarious, and their deep dives into these sometimes near-perfect but mostly flawed historical films is something I very much look forward to being a part of as a listener. Ian Holm forever!

The Lesser of 2 Weevils Indeed!
Well, I was already a huge David C fan thanks to his terrific History of England Podcast when trolling for some other interesting, thought provoking & super nerdy/(or as my fam calls them)weirdo podcasts to listen to whist walking to/from work or scrubbing the pots/pans...voila, I ran across the Things that Made England podcast, which led me to this!! All I can say is that I cried, yes Gentle Listeners, I actually cried when David told the Third Funniest Joke in the Master & Commander episode (wrongfully, BTW) podcast, probably one of my all time fav movies esp as I am a Veteran of the US Navy & love watching either the Bristish or US Navies blow stuff up! Anyhoo, you gotta listen, these guys here are fantastic!!! ...did my due dilligence guys, keep up the incredible work!!!:)

Used to be good. Now it’s awful
Now they are just silly, unprepared and think they are terribly entertaining with their immature stupid digressions. I mean “stupid digressions” in both senses because many of these are themselves cracking up about how little they know about the subject.

You two are so much fun to listen to. Thank you for this podcast!

    Das Boot hat mich getötet
You two wacky lads had way too much fun with this episode! I always get a giggle from your quips, but this time I nearly died! I’d just taken a hearty swallow of my beverage when the subject of fig leaf comparisons...arose. Well played, sirs.

    Great Podcast
A refreshing take on historical cinema, which often feels like a completely oversaturated subject area. I only wish that these episodes were longer! Podcast is informative and fun, especially the approach from different generations and fields of expertise. David comes across intelligent and well versed in the history, which melds perfectly with Wolf’s cinematic background, well spoken delivery and intoxicating aura. He is everything I want and aspire to be in a man.

    Super interesting movie takes
David Crowther brings his love of history and Wolf his love of cinema for some highly entertaining debate and contrasting perspectives on films. They discuss a diverse array of films and introduce them in a way that stimulates your desire to see the films they discuss.

    A gem of a podcast
I'm a huge fan of The History of England podcast so of course was excited when David Crowther started this new podcast. It did not disappoint, David and Wolf make a great team, bringing differing opinions and perspectives to the movies they review. Always fun to listen to, smart, and cinematically educational. Thanks David and Wolf, keep up the brilliant work!

Great podcast for movie or history fans
I’ve been a big fan of David Crowther’s amazing podcast “The History of England”, all 260 or more episodes, and I really enjoy this new podcast has well. He and his friend Wolf discuss historical movies, judging them based on factors such as historical accuracy and overall content. It’s a bit like “Rex Factor” applied to the cinema. If you like movies or history or both, you should enjoy it. Of course, there still are references to cricket and that amusing activity with men running around in short pants chasing a ball that the British call football.

Joyful examination of History and Film
I’ve loved David’s History of England’s podcast for years. Here he teams up with Wolf, the perfect cohost, for a rollicking look at historical films. I may disagree with some of their conclusions regarding the artistic merit of the films, but I love the journey. After all, that’s what matters. They have great chemistry as cohost and I hope they keep the podcast going for many years.

If you could invite anyone to dinner...
If I could invite anyone to dinner in the whole world it would be David Crowther. His podcasts are absolutely brilliant, his style is witty and charming, and he always seems to be having a great time! I’ve loved his History of England podcast for years, and am now loving every minute of this new movie discussion podcast. Keep up the great work!

    Fun, fun,fun
Really enjoy this podcast. Oodles of information plus listening to other people’s perspectives is so interesting (even though they are wrong!). Find myself yelling while listening ‘Your wrong’ and ‘You MUST be kidding me!’ Just love to podcasts that make you think. More please Gentlemen😊

    One Host Too Many
It feels sacreligious to give one star to a pod co-hosted by the inimitable David Crowther, but therein lies the rub: it's co-hosted. And the co-host makes the show unlistenable, because you can't listen after throwing your phone at the wall. Regarding the superb historical film A Man For All Seasons, David's co-host offered the following observations within the first few painful minutes (paraphrasing here): `It was really annoying that Thomas More's family had to suffer because he wouldn't simply renounce his faith.' ... Hurrah! Good point! They should probably rework that silly Joan Of Arc storyline, too, and why must Jesus sacrifice himself for mankind? A rewrite of the Bible is clearly in order. `The female characters were relegated to the outskirts.' ... Could that have been, just maybe, because the principal characters in this film about a high state power struggle were the king, the chancellor, and the cardinal? (In any case, More's wife and daughter played significant parts, even though they were marginal to the great historical theme being played). `The film was visually dull.' ... No, it was sumptuous. No fancy camera work was needed because the interior and exterior scenes alike were so arresting. `The costumes displeased.' ... They were period costumes! Historically accurate, I presume. And a pleasure to see. Pity David isn't soloing here.
