Town of the Big House

35

Questions are raised when an out-of-town businessman comes to Baltimore offering bold promises. Kahan Dhillon, a young Sikh, Indian-American real estate developer from Fairfax County, mysteriously shows up in Baltimore touting a $10 billion citywide redevelopment plan. Although he represents himself as a civic leader and savior for a city in need of change, something seems awry. Is Kahan Dhillon a legitimate developer looking to do good for Charm City? Or is the city of Baltimore being exploited by a con man? Perhaps there's something more complicated at play... could he be a pawn in a larger political corruption scandal? Part verite documentary, part character study, and part investigative expose, Season 1 of Town of the Big House tracks the year and a half Producer Richard Yeagley covered the story, interacting with and immersing himself into the life of the enigmatic developer.

    Hoping for a Sequel
When I finished all the episodes of this podcast I was yearning for more. Eloquent and decisive, this podcast gives a glimpse into the actions of a curious character. A man who appears quite harmless but there is a secret lurking beneath. It left me thinking, it left me more intrigued than when I started and I hope there will be updates coming soon! Because this story isn't over.

    GREAT listen.
Loved this podcast. Truly a binge-listen. The coverage of the main subject is fantastic and really gets you thinking. Excellent study of people in general...no matter who/what Kayan is, the lengths he is willing to go for his cause are staggering. Great story and superb reporting.

    Compelling and well reported
Narrative podcasts that examine a mysterious person or series of events are now a popular genre, but this story really stood out! Excellent reporting, good pacing and a very compelling topic. Producing journalism on such a complex civic story that covers a range of issues is no easy task. But Yeagley and his colleagues are up to the task.

    Intriguing
Very entertaining and informative listen into the types of corruption that plagues this city. Would recommend this to anyone that has any interest in the workings of how people with money or power can try and take advantage for there own benefit or lives in Baltimore for that matter. Would love to hear a second season of this. Not a normal podcast listener but thoroughly enjoyed listening to all five episodes to and from work for a week.

    Fascinating
It's sad to hear about the decline of such a great place. Excellent reporting on a bad actor attempting to take advantage of a city in search of hope. Baltimore needs more individuals like Mr. Yeagley doing the good work!

    What a Story! Amazing Reporting!
Wow, I just binged this podcast straight through and what a story! This kind of in depth, on the ground reporting is hard to find these days but this portrait of a desperate city coupled with an apparently desperate and possibly crazed man paints a riveting tale of how the challenges of post industrial cities and their residents starved for progress can be exploited for profit...or maybe for something else??? There’s definitely more to this story. Hoping for a second season. Someone please sponsor this show so the producers can do season 2!!!!

A portrait of a City willing to pin our hopes on Snake Oil
This is a compelling and well-researched story in five parts about a Lyle-Lanley-esque huckster who breezes into Baltimore under mysterious circumstances and fast talks his way too close to the sun. Don’t wanna spoil anything, but this podcast has it *all,* and I’m desperately hoping for after-thoughts, a penetrative oral history, or a second season. So. Good.

    WELL DONE!!!
From the very beginning of this podcast it had me saying WOW. I have listen to it twice just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It full of information that I already knew about Kahan Dhillon and things I didn’t know. Richard did a great job bringing this story to light. It is well done and I hope that the citizens of Baltimore listen and learn. #dontdrinkthekahanaid

I’m not a pod cast person
I have never listened to more then one episode of a pod cast in my life. I try and try to get into them but my mind ends up wondering half way in to an episode. I guess it’s lack of visual stimulation to accompany the audio. I thought at first that it might have been the particular pod casts but I have tried many at this point and they all end up with the same result... me not really listening. I am from Baltimore so I though I would give Town of the Big House a try... I binge listened to all the episodes in 1 day. Now I am upset that I have no more to listen to. This audio documentary is amazing. Can’t wait for future seasons.

    Amazingly well done
This podcast is awesome- VERY well put together expose of a true huckster- proof of the old adage that truth really IS often stranger than fiction ! If you’re a fan of Crimetown and other such podcasts focusing on cities- you’ll LOVE this one !

Thank you for real journalism again
What i appreciate most is the fact checking, the lengthy research, and the objective analysis of the data you found and experiences had first hand. I knew he was a fraud the first time I met him but so many of my peers wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt - thank you for shining a light of truth at a time when so many are trying to exploit our city and it’s people. Great work.
